How Is a Monthly Loan Payment Calculated?

For a standard fixed-rate loan with equal monthly payments, the monthly payment can be estimated using the amortization formula.

Monthly payment formula:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ [(1 + r)ⁿ − 1]

Where:

  • P = original loan principal

  • r = monthly interest rate expressed as a decimal

  • n = total number of monthly payments

  • EMI = estimated monthly installment, including principal and interest

To calculate the monthly rate, divide the annual interest rate by 12 and then by 100.

For example, an annual interest rate of 8% gives a monthly rate of approximately 0.006667.

If the interest rate is 0%, the monthly payment is simply the principal divided by the number of payments.

What is a loan calculator?

A loan calculator is an online tool that estimates your monthly loan payment, total interest, and total repayment amount. You can enter the loan amount, annual interest rate, and repayment term to understand the potential cost of borrowing.

To estimate your monthly loan payment, enter the loan amount, annual interest rate, and loan term in months. Click the Calculate button to view your estimated monthly payment and total borrowing cost.

Yes, a standard loan calculator uses the annual interest rate to estimate the interest included in your monthly payments. Additional charges, insurance, and lender fees may not be included unless the calculator specifically supports them.

Your monthly payment depends on the interest rate and repayment term. For example, a $10,000 loan at an 8% annual interest rate over 36 months would have an estimated monthly payment of $313.36, excluding additional fees.

A longer loan term generally reduces the monthly payment because the borrowed amount is spread over more months. However, you may pay more total interest over the life of the loan.

You can use the calculator to estimate payments for different types of loans when they follow a standard fixed-rate repayment structure. Actual payments may vary depending on lender terms, fees, and the loan agreement.

No. The results are estimates based on the information entered and the calculator’s calculation method. Your lender may use different terms, fees, payment dates, or rounding rules, so confirm the final figures with your lender.

A monthly payment is the amount you pay each month toward your loan. Total repayment is the combined amount paid over the full loan term, including the principal and interest but excluding any charges not included in the estimate.
